Hunting Dark Matter in Einstein Rings
On June 30, 2026, the Rubin Observatory began the Legacy Survey of Space and Time — a ten-year scan of the southern sky, visible from Cerro Pachón in Chile. Each patch of sky will be imaged around 800 times, extending the effective exposure time.
Among the objects it captures are strong gravitational lenses: systems where a galaxy’s mass bends the light of a background source. Near-perfect alignment produces an Einstein ring — but that’s a special case; more often you get arcs or multiple images of the same source. These systems are rare, but they let us map the mass distribution within galaxies — and through that, reveal traces of the dark matter we’re after.
